That's right... I now have dog hoodies. American Apparel zip-up dog hoodies. These hoodies are guaranteed to make your dog look even cuter than it already is. Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention

Joshua's getting ready to make his yearly trek to Philadelphia for one of his favorite conventions. The Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention is one of the biggest and best conventions that we have attended. This year it's taking place on February 10th, 11th and 12th. This is the first time that I will not attending the Philadelphia Convention with Joshua, but I'm not sending him empty handed. I've been busy putting out a new design and a few classic Acanthus reprints. Everything is being restocked at Vitae including every one's favorite Indian hoodie and Indian grey deep v-neck.

The Deity design has always been popular... I reprinted it on a tri-black American Apparel deep v-neck with ivory ink.

Holiday Promenade 2011

There has been a lack of blog posts this month because I've been busy stocking up for the East Village Holiday Promenade. My Acanthus racks are full and I even put out some scarves (which make great gifts, hint hint). We also had to decorate our store window for the event. Julie was the one behind the nostalgic window display and I think it looks amazing!

Along with all of the store window displays there will be fireworks, horse and carriage rides, performances from the Nutcracker and lots of goodies inside all of the shops. It's always a magical night in the East Village.

For everyone that lives outside of Des Moines... I'll be updating Etsy next week with lots of cozy hoodies, t-shirts and scarves.

New Pencil Skirt

At Vitae we've had a lot of customers looking for pencil skirts... well here you go. This is the perfect skirt. It's an American Apparel cotton skirt featuring our bird design in a pearl black ink. It's so comfortable and flattering on everyone! Best of all it's only $25!

We used it in the fashion show last Friday. We paired it with a Suzabelle blouse and a red vintage skinny belt. This is one of the first photos of the show and was taken by Jetim Art Photography. Accidental Industry Fashion Show

It's finally here... this Friday night is the Accidental Industry Fashion show. At Vitae we have been preparing for the past 2 months and are so excited to be involved. This will be the first year for the show which is being produced by Sarah Jae Johnson, Lacy Brunnette and Lucy Shay. The focus of the show is party wear, a perfect kick off for the holiday fashion season.

The show will feature collections from: Hill Vintage, Atomic Garage, Shu Shu Maus, Raygun, Magpie and Vitae Design Collective.

There will be a silent auction at the event to benefit Geez Louise! Young Woman's Organization and Van Holmgren (who also did the poster) has been busy designing the runway.

Tickets are $12 at the door or are still available for $10 at Vitae and Raygun through Thursday evening. There will be a cash bar and after party at the venue. 21+ to attend.

Warpaint Update

Joshua was part of an art event in Des Moines called Warpaint two weeks ago that involved 16 artists. It was bracketed so 2 artists would compete in each round with the hopes of winning the crowd votes to move to the next round. The artist's had 1 hour, a black marker and a 4ft. by 4 ft. canvas. A theme was randomly drawn 15 minutes before starting each round. There were 4 rounds, Joshua made it to round 3 where he lost by one vote to our talented friend Anna. Anna went onto round 4 and won the whole competition. Below are the 3 panels Joshua created.

There is a lot going on at Vitae lately. This Friday we'll be having a trunk show featuring Julia Lovan. Julia is an up and coming Des Moines designer that will be showcasing her Breakfast at Tiffany's inspired designs for men and women. She's also been collecting some vintage accessories to pair with her wares. This is a must see collection so stop by and enjoy the festivities. We'll have music by my brother Andrew (the one that was moving to Colorado but moved to Nashville instead, long story) plus The World Food Festival will be going on right outside of our door.

Andrew's Colorado Bound

I would like to start off by saying I have an incredible family. I am very lucky to be so close to my mom, grandma and brothers. We truly do enjoy being together. But sometimes I wish time could just stand still and we could all just live in the same town and get together on the weekends and just play/ listen to music. I know that's not possible and I have been dreading the day that one or both of my brother's finally decide to move. I knew it was going to happen, they have both talked about moving for years. As years passed and they stayed, I grew selfishly hopeful that my family would stay together... until a couple of weeks ago. Andrew, my youngest brother, announced he was moving to Boulder. Bummer, I thought to myself, but I'm sure he'll at least be here until the spring and by then he might change his mind. No such luck, he's leaving this Monday. I am truly happy for him. I think he needs a change and it will be great for him to be around some talented bluegrass musicians. I'm just sad and going to miss him. I guess I'll have to plan more trips to Boulder!

I'm sharing a video I took of my brothers and their friend Etienne playing at the West Des Moines Farmers Market. Andrew is playing the mandolin, Bryan is playing the guitar and Etienne is playing the fiddle. Music plays a big part in our family. My brothers are talented musicians and have even inspired my mom and I to learn to play. Times like the one in the video are what I am going to miss the most. I'm definitely going to look forward to the next family jam when Andrew comes home or we go to Colorado... I had better get to practicing on the mandolin.

Our Summer Vacation

I am loving this fall weather but it makes me a little nostalgic for the summer. I can't stop thinking about our vacation to Colorado this past July.

The first part of our trip took place in Boulder where we spent some time with and a college roommate and her fiance. We had a blast! Just like old times. We also did a little too much shopping and eating. Boulder has some amazing gluten-free options!

Next it was off to Rockygrass! I had been looking forward to The Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival for a year and it did not disappoint. We met my mom and brothers at the festival, they had already been there for a week participating in the Rockygrass Academy so when we got there the campsite was all set up. We camped with my family and a bunch of their friends right outside of the festival along the St. Vrain River. I wasn't sure about camping at first but I loved it! I was worried about not being able to sleep but I really didn't mind being waken up at 3am to some of the most talented young musicians playing right outside of my tent. We spent 5 nights camping out and 3 full days listening to some amazing bluegrass. Looking forward to making Rockygrass a yearly family vacation!

This is part of our campsite. My brother, Andrew, is playing his cello with some other musicians and there is a large crowd watching. This is a nightly occurrence.

Fall Fashion

In Iowa we are having perfect fall weather right now which makes me want to go shopping for new fall clothes. I've seen so many cute dresses and skirts but I am trying to be a little more reasonable this season. I have a closet full of adorable dresses that I rarely wear and I continue to buy more. Before I purchase anymore dresses I need a good pair of denim and some kick ass t-shirts.

So I was browsing on Pinterest when I came across this t-shirt brand called Jedidiah. I fell in love with a couple of their designs. Being a t-shirt designer I am pretty picky about t-shirts and rarely by any for myself. That is about to change. These t-shirt will be perfect for fall. Not only does Jedidiah make cool shirts but they are a pretty cool company. They are a humanitarian-based apparel brand. You can read more about it on their website. www.jedidiahusa.com.

Spring at Vitae

We finally have nice weather in Des Moines and with the nice weather brings lots of people down to the East Village, even bagpipers (it's St. Paddy's Day). The spring weather also means spring cleaning. I've been getting the store geared up for spring! New clothing and jewelry are on the way!

First, I am so excited for this new jewelry line called MapleXO. In 2 weeks we will have bangles, earrings and rings made from recycled skateboard decks. The jewelry is beautiful!

Tomorrow night, December 19th, is the annual Holiday Promenade in the East Village. This will be a first for Vitae and we have been busy preparing. There are a lot of new warm and cozy items in the store! Along with warm clothes we will have some yummy food courtesy of Hu Hot in Ankeny and some holiday treats. We will also have the Conley Brothers (my little bros) playing us some old time music later in the evening. All of the stores will be open and offering treats and/or entertainment. Starting in October you will be able to buy Acanthus Apparel at 2 new locations in the midwest!

As early as next week Acanthus t-shirts will be available at the Conception Gallery in Saint Joseph, Michigan. It's a great tattoo studio/ art gallery that's owned by our good friend Zaq Weaver.

By the end of October Acanthus will have an array of items at the Queen City Emporium in Springfield, Missouri. Super cute store in a trendy area of Springfield that sells artisan handmade goods and supplies.

So if your in either of those areas please stop in and check out the new apparel and all of the other fantastic items available.

Well, it's time to get off my suntanned be-hind (we're being hypothetical here) and get acclimated to the brisk Fall schedule taking shape before us. First of all, Happy Birthday to us! It's been 2 years since we officially opened the doors at Vitae & we're so happy that not only can our little town can support a concept store like ours, the Indie scene is THRIVING! I mean look at Market Day...geeze, kudos everybody.

Come have some cake already. Just like last year, our anniversary co-incides with Art Stop - so while here, you can take in some cultcha and enjoy the Artwork of Joshua Bowers. We're excited to bring you this powerful exhibit and show everyone what some of us know...he's immensely talented and very funny once he's had a few. Seriously.

Here is a past article from the April edition of the Vitae newsletter. It was written by Julie Punelli about Acanthus Apparel.

Acanthus Apparel is a very high profile line here at Vitae and in the independent fashion scene. Husband and wife, Joshua and Alyssa Bowers, are the team behind the label. The two met at Iowa State where both persued fine arts degrees. Josh is in high demand as a tattoo artist and his work is recognized globally for its stark beauty and deep, murky symbolism. Alyssa brings his designs to life through very wearable cotton pieces for men and women by a process of hand dying, screen print, and distressing.

Their clothing line has a very loyal following. Since each piece is a work of art, many look forward to acquiring a 'copy' in some form of every new design and often seek to fill in their collections with work from previous seasons,though they are for the most part limited runs. Their work speaks for itself, but there's so much more that they bring to the table. Alyssa has a keen analytical nature and puts it to work to bring our collective and many artists endeavors to fruition with amazing grace and vision. As a team they bring their unique perspective to the world as a kind of starting place for discussion as if all kinds of possibilities and impossibilities are lined up to become possible. The dichotomy of the dark, haunting imagery and the unassuming almost playful presentation are engaging to a wide range of people.

Acanthus apparel defies typecasts and opens up boundaries from the deepest corners of the soul and exposes them to the light of day. Joshua seems to possess the ability to stir up the ancient sea beds and abandoned, forgotten promises and lies and hands them all a daisy from tomorrow.

...and now we are 5...yup, count em! There are now 5 small businesses in the Western Gateway (Art and Fashion District). The Robert Spellman Gallery was first (way to go, Rob!), followed by Dorothea's Closet Vintage, then along came Vitae. Jaded Lotus Tattoo and Piercing opened up in August and were SUPER excited to welcome Erin Bollman's, Finders Creepers, to the fold. Set to open this Halloween! Stay tuned for deets!

Swap O' Rama Rama comes to Des Moines!

Swap O Rama Rama (SORR) is a clothing swap and do-it-yourself extravaganza that has been making the rounds internationally since the 1990's. The event is being put on locally by artists Kelsey Blessman (Kelsey Cliche) and Stephanie Bracelin, with the help of many D.I.Yers. Just bring $10. and a bag of unwanted clothes and wearables to trade and up-cycle on site. There will be stations set up for sewing, screenprinting, beading and otherwise embellishing and re-designing your new-found items. If you have ideas and skills (and materials) you'd like to share - they're open to it! There will also be an informal "show us what you made" fashion show that will also feature works of local Independent designers. Everyone leaves with a bag of finds, lots of crafty new friends and a big dose of empowerment for living the thrifty life more creatively! Designer Spotlight: Rock 'N Reconstruct

Vitae has not one, but TWO Sarah Johnsons! We figure this Collective's big enough for the both of 'em. This month's featured designer is the Sarah Johnson of Rock 'N Reconstruct - a local legend in Indie design. This bold and seriously flattering line has demanded international attention and continues to push forward with innovative twists on the vintage look. Like many of us Rip & Stitchers, she was a longtime thrift store shopper and began by modifying her finds to suit her personal taste. When she moved from the tall corn state to L.A. upon graduating college, she took a job with a designer while looking for a job in her field. What had always been a passion quickly became the career as she was noticed by other designers and west coast shoppers alike. R 'N R dresses have been spotted on celebrities and in magazines.

With her line established in boutiques in California & across the country, she's recently decided to make Iowa her home base once again. Some of you may know that it was Sarah who put together the first Indie Design showcase a few years back, doing much of the coordination long distance. Iowa Fashion Week, a series of style shows and fundraiser was the mama of Vitae's Runway Revue. Sarah's efforts, which she proclaimed to be a "Thank You" to Iowa, really opened a door for the local D.I.Y. community. We at Vitae are thankful to her for that, and have been happily paying it forward ever since.

Emergence Fashion Show

Emergence, a fashion show & silent auction event to benefit the Ruth Harbor House, will be at the Des Moines Social Club on Saturday, July 11 at 8pm.

The Ruth Harbor house offers shelter and support to young mothers and their babes. The auction will feature some fashions from the show.

The show features pin-up style designs by Acanthus (this is a first for me), Magpie, Rok:her:roots, Jae Anonyma, Pink Revolver, and Rock n' Reconstruct.

$5 gets you in to the fashion show; VIP seats & after party tickets are $25. Available at the door or on IowaTix.com!

Joshua is taking a printmaking class at the Des Moines Art Center. Here is the first in a series of prints that he will be making. These prints will be available at Iron Heart Tattoo in Des Moines. I am also planning on printing these designs on some apparel.

This is a great week to enjoy some art in Des Moines. The Des Moines Art Festival starts this Friday and goes through Sunday. When you're at the festival stop into The Instinct Gallery on Locust and check out the munny toy that Joshua designed as well as some other amazing artwork. Also stop into Vitae and look at the artwork from our Female Trouble show, featuring 7 talented ladies and purchase some apparel from local designers. Acanthus has some fun tank tops and dresses.

A couple of other events that you don't want to miss... 80/35 music festival on July 3rd and 4th, where Art Noir and Vitae will have booths, and St. Vitus and the Taxi Dancers will be performing! On July 11th the Vitae ladies and some friends will be the designers in a pin-up themed show titled Emergence at the Des Moines Social Club.

Kill The Profits

This piece is titled "Kill The Profits". It is oil on wood and over a foot tall. The driving idea comes from the phrase, " Don't kill the Messenger". The piece is created with a fair amount of irony since it is human nature to do just that, even to ourselves. The more we try to climb our soap box to be heard, the more vulnerable we are to falling.

It will be displayed at Vitae Design Collective in early march along with work by fellow DSM tattooers; Paul Nycz, Mike Diamond, and Budha. Come check the show out March 18th at the Art Noir open house.

Daphne!

I just finished this machine. It's a shorty bulldog frame I named "Daphne" after my adorable but ferocious female chihuahua. It's the first shorty frame that I have made and I am excited to make more. It's petite and light, very easy on the wrist. The coil tops are salvaged vintage ivory, and I made a bezel and fixed a false tooth in, a gift from a customer of mine who makes false teeth. Truly one of my best machines, I will be holding on to this one for a while.
